View PricingThe Global Bovine Hide Market Continues Its Modest Growth
IndexBox has just published a new report "World: Raw Hides And Skins Of Cattle - Market Report. Analysis And Forecast To 2025". Here is a summary of the report's key findings.
The Consumption of Raw Cattle Hides and Skins Continues Its Modest Growth
From 2007 to 2016, the global bovine hide market grew steadily to X tons in 2016. In value terms, the market stood at $X (IndexBox estimates). After a noticable decline of market value in 2009, there was a recovery and a period of further growth, peaking at $X in 2014, then, the market assumed a downward trend.
Approx. half of the Global Volume of Raw Hides and Skins of Cattle Was Consumed by China, Brazil, the U.S. and India
The countries with the highest consumption were China (X%, based on tons), Brazil (X%), the U.S. (X%), India (X%) and Italy (X%), together comprising approx. X% of global consumption.
The highest annual rates of growth with regard to the consumption of raw hides and skins of cattle from 2007 to 2016 were recorded in the U.S., with a +X% growth. Following significant consumption rates of growth, the U.S. strengthened its share in terms of global consumption from X% in 2007, to X% in 2016.
In terms of the leading consuming countries, high per capita consumption was recorded in Italy (X kg/year in 2016), which was significantly higher than the world average of X kg/year. In Italy per capita consumption decreased from 2007-2016. The annual growth of per capita consumption from 2007 to 2016 was the most notable in the U.S., with a +X% growth.
The Consumption of Hides and Skins Is Expected to Exceed X Million Tons by the End of 2025
The main impetus for the increased consumption of raw cattle hides and skins is set to be the further expansion of the leather industry, a key consumer of raw cattle hides and skins for the production and manufacture of a wide range of leather products: shoes, outer wear, bags, suit-and-briefcases, belts and wallets etc. The rising population and increase in disposable household income, particularly in the developing-economy countries, will promote and foster interest in high-quality products made from natural leather. Alternatively, competition from less wear-resistant but cheaper artificial leather-type products constitutes a factor that may significantly impede market growth. The limited rise in the supply of raw hide due to measured cattle population growth constitutes yet another restrictive factor to market development.
Market performance is forecast to remain relatively stable with an anticipated CAGR of +X% for the nine-year period from 2016 to 2025. This period is expected to drive the market volume to X tons by the end of 2025.
The Major Producers of Raw Hides and Skins Were China, the U.S., Brazil and India
The production of raw hides and skins of cattle gained X% from its outset level to X tons in 2016.
In 2016, the countries with the highest production figures with regard to raw cattle hides and skins were China (X tons), the U.S.(X tons) and Brazil (X K tons) and India (X tons). These countries together produced X% of the global output of raw cattle hides and skins. In China and the U.S., production levels increased by +X% and +X% annually from 2007 to 2016; this can mainly be attributed to favourable economic conditions, the growth of global downstream industries and efficient raw material supply chains.
Approx. X% of the Global Output of Raw Hides and Skins Is Intended for Exports
Raw cattle hides and skins will continue to be a highly traded global commodity. Presently, global exports account for a X% share of total production. The main driver of international trade is the growth in consumption by the leather industry in Southeast Asia, where the domestic production of raw cattle hides and skins does not have a sufficient resource base. At the same time, restrictions on trade in a number of countries regarding the import of raw cattle hides and skins are a limiting factor in the development of international trade.
The U.S. Remains the Main Global Supplier of Raw Hides and Skins
In 2016, the volume of global exports with regard to raw hides and skins totaled X tons, with a mixed trend pattern being observed over the last few years. Following a significant X% rise in 2010, the wolume of global exports remained relatively stable until 2014, when exports of raw hides and skin declined by X%. From 2014-2016, the volume of global exports recorded a positive trend pattern.
In 2016, the U.S. (X% based on tons) was the main global supplier of raw cattle hides and skins. It was followed by Australia (X%), Germany (X%), Canada (X%), Italy (X%), France (X%) and the Netherlands (X%). Despite being the largest global producers of raw hides and skins of cattle China, Brazil, India, and Argentina did not export much of their production, implying that it was either domestically consumed, or put in storage.
The share of Chile increased significantly from X% in 2007, to X% in 2016. At the same time, the shares of Turkey (-X percentage points) and the U.S. (-X percentage points) declined over the period under review.
China Stands out as a Top Importer of Hides and Skins
The volume of global imports totaled X tons in 2016. The import dynamic was generally in line with exports: these trade flows globally complement each other.
In 2016, China (X tons), Italy (X tons), Mexico (X tons), South Korea (X tons) and Germany (X K tons) were the leading destinations for imports of raw cattle hides and skins, together making up X% of global imports. Amongst the major importing countries China (+X% per year) and Mexico (+X% per year) earned the highest annual rates of growth from 2007 to 2016. While the share of China increased significantly from X% in 2007 to X% in 2016, the share of Italy illustrated a negative dynamic. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
