Global Equity Funds See Continued Outflows Amid Tariff Tensions

Global equity funds have witnessed a notable shift in investor sentiment, with a second weekly outflow in seven weeks by February 5. This trend is attributed to heightened caution among investors following U.S. President Donald Trump's announcement of steep tariffs on Mexico, Canada, and China. The data highlights a net sale of $3.86 billion worth of global equity funds, contrasting sharply with the previous week's net purchases of $15.35 billion, as reported by LSEG Lipper. In specific regions, investors pulled out a net $10.71 billion from U.S. equity funds, while showing some confidence in Asian and European markets with net investments of $4.86 billion and $1.88 billion, respectively.

On a brighter note, global equity sectoral funds recorded approximately $2.9 billion in net inflows, marking their fifth consecutive week of net purchases. Notably, the financial and consumer discretionary sectors continued to attract funds for the fourth successive week, receiving $2 billion and $911 million, respectively.

Global bond funds maintained their appeal for the sixth week in a row, drawing an impressive $17.74 billion in net inflows. Short-term bond funds were particularly favored, experiencing inflows for the 18th straight week, with investors contributing $4.14 billion. Furthermore, loan participation and high yield bond funds also remained attractive, garnering $3.03 billion and $1.62 billion in inflows, respectively.

In contrast, precious metals funds faced their third consecutive week of net sales, totaling $563 million. However, energy funds experienced a reversal in fortune, with a net inflow of $100 million.

Amidst these developments, emerging market funds continued to see an exodus from equity investments for the 13th straight week, amounting to $600 million. Yet, they managed to attract $1.85 billion into bond funds, marking the fifth week of net purchases.
