Exports
In 2021, global exports of peat rose remarkably to 13M tons, increasing by 7.6% against the previous year. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.5% from 2007 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by 27% against the previous year. Global exports peaked in 2021 and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, peat exports skyrocketed to $2.3B in 2021. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +1.8% from 2007 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 20% against the previous year. Global exports peaked at $2.4B in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, exports failed to regain the momentum.
Exports by Country
The biggest shipments were from Latvia (2.2M tons), Germany (1.7M tons), Canada (1.7M tons), Estonia (1.4M tons), the Netherlands (1.3M tons) and Lithuania (1M tons), together reaching 73% of total export. It was distantly followed by Ireland (605K tons), mixing up a 4.8% share of total exports. Belgium (391K tons), Russia (357K tons), Turkmenistan (357K tons), Sweden (340K tons), Finland (327K tons) and Belarus (264K tons) held a relatively small share of total exports.
In value terms, Canada ($581M) remains the largest peat supplier worldwide, comprising 26% of global exports. The second position in the ranking was occupied by Latvia ($277M), with a 12% share of global exports. It was followed by the Netherlands, with a 10% share.
In Canada, peat exports expanded at an average annual rate of +5.4% over the period from 2007-2021. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Latvia (+9.0% per year) and the Netherlands (+6.1% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The average peat export price stood at $181 per ton in 2021, picking up by 9.8% against the previous year. There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Turkmenistan, while Belarus was amongst the lowest. From 2007 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Ireland, while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Imports
In 2021, approx. 13M tons of peat were imported worldwide; surging by 14% compared with 2020 figures. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.5% from 2007 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, peat imports soared to $2.4B in 2021. In general, imports showed prominent growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 39% y-o-y. As a result, imports attained the peak of $2.5B. from 2016 to 2021, the growth of global imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2021, the Netherlands (1.9M tons) and the U.S. (1.6M tons) represented the main importers of peatin the world, together reaching approx. 28% of total imports. Germany (1,036K tons) ranks next in terms of the total imports with a 8.3% share, followed by Afghanistan (8%), Italy (6.1%), the UK (5.9%), France (5%) and Belgium (4.8%). Poland (433K tons), Canada (355K tons), Spain (324K tons) and China (272K tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
In value terms, the U.S. ($591M), Afghanistan ($504M) and the Netherlands ($171M) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together comprising 52% of global imports. These countries were followed by Germany, France, Italy, the UK, Spain, China, Belgium, Poland and Canada, which together accounted for a further 26%.
China saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The average peat import price stood at $194 per ton in 2021, with an increase of 3.7% against the previous year. Prices varied noticeably by the country of destination; the country with the highest price was Afghanistan, while Canada was amongst the lowest. From 2007 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Netherlands, while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
