Global Stainless Steel Production Sees Significant Growth in Early 2024

Global stainless steel production has witnessed a notable rise, increasing by 5.4% in the first three quarters of 2024 compared to the same period last year, achieving a total output of 46.09 million tons. This uptick is supported by data from the World Stainless Association. This growth comes amid varied performance in different regions and sectors globally.

A breakout of production reveals Europe's contribution, including Ukraine, increased by 4.9% to 4.69 million tons, while the United States ramped up its production by 9.1%, reaching 1.51 million tons during this period. In Asia, excluding China and South Korea, production saw an 8.1% rise, totaling 5.39 million tons. Meanwhile, China's output increased by 3.4% to 28.63 million tons. Other countries, such as Brazil, South Africa, Indonesia, and South Korea, showed an even more substantial rise of 11.2%, collectively producing 5.86 million tons.

Third Quarter Decline Amid Yearly Gains

The third quarter of 2024, however, saw a slight 1.1% decline in global production compared to the preceding quarter, amounting to 15.65 million tons. Europe experienced a notable reduction of 7.3% q/q to 1.51 million tonnes, and the US saw a 6.9% q/q dip, producing 482 thousand tonnes. Asian production excluding China remained steady at 1.78 million tonnes, while China itself recorded a 2.8% q/q drop to 9.86 million tonnes. Remarkably, other regions managed a 15.1% q/q increase, producing 2.03 million tonnes.

Top Export and Import Nations for Stainless Steel

The export landscape for stainless steel, as recorded in 2024, was led by Italy with an export value of USD 94.5 million, followed closely by the United States at USD 73.3 million, and Austria at USD 65.6 million. Canada and the United Kingdom also registered notable export values at USD 35.2 million and USD 33.3 million, respectively. On the import side, Belgium dominated with imports worth USD 69.2 million, with Italy and the United States following at USD 62.6 million and USD 49.2 million, respectively. These statistics underline the dynamic trade flows in stainless steel amidst fluctuating production levels.
