GM Set to Continue Strong Earnings Momentum Amid Challenges

General Motors (GM) investors are poised for the automaker's fourth-quarter results announcement, as the company is expected to continue its impressive run of quarterly performances. According to a report from Yahoo Finance, fourth-quarter results are anticipated this Tuesday morning, reflecting GM's robust position amid ongoing challenges.

GM's revenues are projected to hit $44.46 billion, surpassing last year's $42.98 billion, with an expected adjusted EPS of $1.83 from an adjusted net income of $1.954 billion. This growth is largely attributed to strong sales in trucks and SUVs, alongside unexpected gains in its electric vehicle (EV) line, which collectively boosted GM's shares by 48% in 2024. GM's full-size SUV and pickup sales achieved significant milestones, marking the highest level since 2007 and securing segment leadership for five consecutive decades.

The automaker's strategic financial maneuvers, including a new $6 billion share repurchase program in addition to an ongoing $10 billion accelerated share repurchase scheme, have significantly enhanced its stock performance. Moreover, GM announced a 33% increase in its dividend starting January, further solidifying investor confidence.

However, GM faces hurdles in its EV division. Despite successful sales of models like the Cadillac Lyriq and Chevrolet Equinox EV, the growth trajectory did not align with initial projections. CFO Paul Jacobson acknowledged a revised, conservative production target of 200,000 units for 2024, as the company endeavors to reduce EV costs by $2 billion to $4 billion in 2025. He also stated that while peak EV losses occurred in 2024, the effort will support improved EV earnings before interest and taxes (EBIT) in future years.

Additionally, GM concluded its autonomous Cruise business in the fourth quarter, integrating it with its Supercruise software group. The company also faced a $5 billion writedown in China due to a devaluation in its joint ventures. The geopolitical climate further complicates matters, with potential tariff impositions by the U.S. raising concerns over GM's international operations and profitability.
