Google Unveils New Gemini Models to Compete with Low-Cost AI Rivals

Alphabet's Google has announced enhancements to its Gemini family of large language models, with the introduction of a competitively priced product line that targets the low-cost segment dominated by Chinese rival DeepSeek. The report can be accessed here.

The technology giant has unveiled various versions of its Gemini models that differ in price and performance, including the newly launched Gemini 2.0 Flash. Following positive feedback, Google also released the Flash-Lite model, which is even more economical. As of now, Gemini 2.0 Flash has been made available to the general public while Flash-Lite and a revamped 'Pro' model are in the testing phases.

Koray Kavukcuoglu, CTO of Google's DeepMind AI lab, highlighted the importance of user feedback in the development of Flash-Lite. Despite Flash-Lite's affordability, certain inputs are priced at $0.019 per 1 million tokens—more expensive than DeepSeek's current pricing but notably less than OpenAI's cheapest model.
