Google Ventures into India's Carbon Removal Sector with Major Biochar Deal

Google has announced its plan to purchase carbon credits from an innovative Indian project that transforms agricultural waste into biochar, a type of charcoal that eliminates carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. The deal, in collaboration with Varaha, marks Google's first significant step into India's carbon dioxide removal (CDR) sector and is distinguished as one of the largest biochar initiatives to date.

With major tech corporations striving to mitigate emissions through CDR—which includes various methods aimed at removing CO2 from both the atmosphere and oceans—Google is aligning with a strategy that could potentially offer a more economically viable solution in the near term.

Randy Spock, Google's carbon removal lead, emphasized the scalability of biochar, citing its potential worldwide reach using existing technologies while simultaneously enhancing soil health. As part of the agreement, Varaha will acquire agricultural waste from numerous smallholder farms across India and develop reactors to convert this waste into biochar, which can lock in CO2 for several centuries. Additionally, biochar will be provided to farmers as an eco-friendly alternative to traditional fertilizers.

Google's commitment includes purchasing 100,000 tons of carbon credits through 2030. Madhur Jain, Varaha's CEO, highlighted the massive potential of India's farm waste, which could generate biochar capable of storing over 100 million tons of CO2 each year.

While CDR presently constitutes only a small fraction of the global carbon trading market, it is anticipated to grow substantially as both nations and companies explore novel avenues to counteract emissions. Despite the enthusiasm, critics argue that CDR should not replace immediate emission reductions and caution that solutions like biochar do not ensure permanent CO2 removal. "We are going to face peak warming," said Jain. "Even if something just reduces (CO2) or removes it for only 20 to 40 or 50 years, I feel that we need to do everything that we can."
