Africa's Green Peas Market - Egypt, Algeria, and Morocco Account for Three-Quarter of Total Consumption

The green peas market in Africa totaled $1.3B in 2018. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +6.4% over the period from 2014 to 2018; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded over the period under review.

Africa's Consumption of Green Peas by Country

The countries with the highest volumes of green peas consumption in 2018 were Egypt (200K tons), Algeria (187K tons) and Morocco (123K tons), accounting for three-quarter of total consumption.

From 2014 to 2018, the most notable rate of growth in terms of green peas consumption, amongst the main consuming countries, was attained by Algeria, while green peas consumption for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest green peas markets in Africa were Egypt ($485M), Kenya ($245M) and Algeria ($239M), with a combined 72% share of the total market.

Production in Africa

The green peas production totaled 689K tons in 2018, going up by 16% against the previous year. The total output volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.1% from 2014 to 2018. The generally positive trend of green peas output was largely conditioned by perceptible growth of the harvested area and a slight expansion in yield figures.

In 2018, approx. 117K ha of peas (green) were harvested in Africa; coming down by -2.1% against the previous year. By contrast, the average green peas yield increased by 18% to 5.9 ton per ha in 2018.

Production by Country

The countries with the highest volumes of green peas production in 2018 were Egypt (203K tons), Algeria (186K tons) and Morocco (123K tons), together comprising 74% of total production.

From 2014 to 2018, the most notable rate of growth in terms of green peas production, amongst the main producing countries, was attained by Algeria, while green peas production for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Exports in Africa

In 2018, approx. 21K tons of peas (green) were exported in Africa; falling by -3.4% against the previous year. In value terms, green peas exports amounted to $77M (IndexBox estimates) in 2018. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +1.4% over the past five years.

Exports by Country

In 2018, Kenya (8.3K tons) and Zimbabwe (6.4K tons) were the key exporters of green peas in Africa, together recording near 69% of total exports. Egypt (2.8K tons) ranks next in terms of the total exports with a 13% share, followed by Uganda (5.1%). The following exporters - Zambia (837 tons), Morocco (673 tons) and Ethiopia (482 tons) - together made up 9.3% of total exports.

From 2014 to 2018, the most notable rate of growth in terms of exports, amongst the main exporting countries, was attained by Zambia (+84.2% per year), while exports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest green peas supplying countries in Africa were Kenya ($33M), Zimbabwe ($26M) and Egypt ($8.8M), together accounting for 88% of total exports. These countries were followed by Zambia, Uganda, Ethiopia and Morocco, which together accounted for a further 9.6%.

Export Prices by Country

In 2018, the green peas export price in Africa amounted to $3,598 per ton, jumping by 17% against the previous year. Over the period from 2014 to 2018, it increased at an average annual rate of +5.7%.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2018, the country with the highest price was Zimbabwe ($4,092 per ton), while Uganda ($1,311 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2014 to 2018, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Egypt, while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
