Guardian Media Group Sells Observer to Tortoise Media

The Observer, with its rich history dating back to 1791, has been a cornerstone of liberal journalism in the UK and joined the Guardian Media Group in 1993. Tortoise Media, which was launched in 2019 by prominent figures including James Harding, a former editor of the London Times, is acquiring the Observer through a mix of cash and shares.

Despite the strategic move perceived by some as part of an ongoing adaptation within the media industry, the transaction has faced resistance from journalists within the Guardian Media Group, who organized a 48-hour strike in response. The concern points towards the potential influence on editorial independence following the acquisition.
