Tortoise Media, which was launched in 2019 by prominent figures including James Harding, a former editor of the London Times, is acquiring the Observer through a mix of cash and shares.

Despite the strategic move perceived by some as part of an ongoing adaptation within the media industry, the transaction has faced resistance from journalists within the Guardian Media Group, who organized a 48-hour strike in response.
