In May 2022, the hazelnut price per ton amounted to $3,400 (FOB, US), falling by -2.4% against the previous month. In general, the export price recorded a abrupt contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in Feb 2022 when the average export price increased by 12% m-o-m. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $5,787 per ton. From Mar 2022 to May 2022, the the average export prices remained at a lower figure.

Average prices varied somewhat for the major foreign markets. In May 2022, the countries with the highest prices were Germany ($4,459 per ton) and Spain ($3,508 per ton), while the average price for exports to Thailand ($3,156 per ton) and China ($3,383 per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From Jan 2022 to May 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Germany (+21.8%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

U.S. Hazelnut Exports

In May 2022, overseas shipments of hazelnuts were finally on the rise to reach 674 tons after two months of decline. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a abrupt shrinkage. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in Feb 2022 with an increase of 31% month-to-month. As a result, the exports reached the peak of 1.5K tons. From Mar 2022 to May 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, hazelnut exports soared to $2.3M (IndexBox estimates) in May 2022. Overall, exports, however, recorded a precipitous curtailment. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in Feb 2022 when exports increased by 47% against the previous month. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $8.8M. From Mar 2022 to May 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

U.S. Hazelnut Exports by Country

China (540 tons) was the main destination for hazelnut exports from the United States, with a 80% share of total exports. Moreover, hazelnut exports to China exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Thailand (99 tons), fivefold. The third position in this ranking was held by Germany (20 tons), with a 3% share.

From Jan 2022 to May 2022, the average monthly growth rate of volume to China totaled +18.4%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average monthly rates of exports growth: Thailand (0.0% per month) and Germany (-83.9% per month).

In value terms, China ($1.8M) remains the key foreign market for hazelnut exports from the United States, comprising 80% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Thailand ($312K), with a 14% share of total exports. It was followed by Germany, with a 3.9% share. From Jan 2022 to May 2022, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of value to China totaled +19.2%.
