Hedge Funds Ramp Up Bullish Bets on US Crude Amid Global Uncertainties

Hedge funds have dramatically increased their bullish positions on US crude oil, spurred by the likelihood of new sanctions impacting Iranian and Russian oil supply and potential economic stimuli from China. According to a Bloomberg report, money managers raised their net-long position on West Texas Intermediate (WTI) by 57,215 lots to 161,201 lots for the week ending December 17. This marks the largest increase since September 2023.

This shift comes as oil prices rally, supported by sanctions threats which could tighten Russian and Iranian oil exports, challenging projections of a supply glut expected by 2025. Moreover, China's aggressive stimulus initiatives to strengthen its position as the world's top crude importer also play a crucial role in boosting projections for oil demand.

IndexBox data highlights significant trends in the US crude oil market, with the export value standing at $117.8 billion in 2023. The leading destinations for US crude exports include the Netherlands at $18.3 billion, China at $13.3 billion, South Korea at $12 billion, Canada at $10.1 billion, and Singapore at $8 billion.

On the imports front, the United States brought in crude oil worth $165.2 billion in 2023. Notably, Canada is the largest exporter to the US, with a figure of $92.5 billion. This is followed by Mexico at $19.8 billion, Saudi Arabia at $10.5 billion, Iraq at $5.7 billion, and Brazil, also at $5.7 billion.

The increase in WTI long-only contracts marks a significant shift in hedge funds' positions, placing them closer to Brents bullish positioning, which has similarly risen to 184,841 lots. With global uncertainties influencing both supply and demand dynamics, the crude oil market continues to draw intense attention from financial markets and policy analysts alike.
