Helvetia Holding AG Considers Sale of German Insurance Operations

Helvetia's German branch recorded 988 million Swiss francs in written premiums and deposits in 2023, accounting for approximately 8.7% of the group's total business volume. Despite this, the division, which includes operations in Italy and Austria, registered a loss in 2023, attributed to the sluggish German economy and decreased construction activity.

As the Swiss insurance sector witnesses increased consolidation interest, Helvetia's strategic move has captured attention, especially after an activist investor accumulated a significant stake in Baloise Holding AG, a leading competitor. This has spurred other major players, such as Zurich Insurance Group AG, Axa SA, and Allianz SE, to analyze potential acquisition opportunities.

Helvetia's share price soared by 31% over the past year, placing its market valuation at around 8.16 billion Swiss francs. As part of its strategic initiatives, the company announced new financial targets for 2025-2027, including enhanced dividend payouts and cost-saving measures exceeding 200 million francs in the next three years.
