The commercial potential of artificial intelligence in film production remains largely untapped as movie studios cautiously navigate collaborations with AI companies like OpenAI. According to Bloomberg, OpenAI has initiated conversations with major studios, including Walt Disney Co. and Warner Bros. Discovery Inc., to explore the possibilities of utilizing its AI tool, Sora, in filmmaking.

Despite these efforts, no concrete deals have yet been finalized, with studios wary of data use and potential conflicts with labor unions. Concerns over artificial intelligence were central to the labor strikes that impacted Hollywood in 2023, indicating a cautious industry stance towards technological integration.

OpenAI's Sora, launched in early 2024, has been positioned as a tool to generate realistic video clips from text prompts. The company, valued at $157 billion, remains engaged with industry players to refine its offerings. CEO Sam Altman has emphasized the value of industry feedback, underscoring that premature partnerships could be detrimental to both sides.

While some filmmakers have welcomed Sora as a creative aid, studios remain skeptical. Unlike successful moves by record labels taking stakes in new technology ventures, the film industry has historically shied away from similar partnerships, as seen with platforms like YouTube and Netflix.

An exception lies with Lionsgate, which recently partnered with Runway to develop an AI model drawing from the studio's content catalog, hinting at broader industry potential. This move could serve as a blueprint for future collaborations, although major players like Disney remain cautious.

The possibilities of licensing extensive movie catalogs to AI companies, potentially securing lucrative deals while avoiding copyright disputes, remain tentative. As the film industry carefully considers the adoption of Sora and similar technologies, the right financial framework for these partnerships is yet to be established, demanding careful consideration of profit-sharing mechanisms with those entitled.
