Honeywell Considers Strategic Split Amid Investor Pressure

In a bold move that marks a significant portfolio readjustment more than a mere breakup, industrial giant Honeywell is contemplating a strategic split into two separate entities. According to Yahoo Finance, Honeywell's CEO Vimal Kapur detailed the transformation plan at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.

Having joined Honeywell in 1989 and now leading the company as CEO since June 2023, Kapur intends to pivot Honeywell more towards growth-oriented markets and enhance its capabilities in new product development and innovation. This major overhaul could result in Honeywell spinning off its advanced material business, with the newly public company projected to begin trading by the end of 2025 or early 2026, generating approximately $3.8 billion in annual revenue.

Further pressure comes from Elliott Management, a formidable activist investor with a $5 billion stake in Honeywell, pushing for a strategic split. Consequently, Honeywell is considering forming two independently traded entities, focusing separately on the automation and aerospace divisions. An official decision has yet to be made, but an update is expected during the upcoming earnings call on February 6.

Kapur remains optimistic about the company's transition, even as shares climbed 8% since late October. However, when benchmarked against the S&P 500's 144% surge over the past five years, Honeywell's 75% rise lags behind. JPMorgan analyst Stephen Tusa suggests that a breakup could see Honeywell's stock value soar to $330 per share, up from its current approximate value of $223.

Industry experts and investors are closely watching Honeywell's strategic moves, as the company's board evaluates all value creation options amidst ongoing activist investor pressures.
