Hong Kong and Macau Strengthen Bond Market with New Linking System

The financial markets of Hong Kong and Macau have strengthened their position in the bond market through the linkage of their bond clearance and settlement systems. This strategic move aims to create a more expansive market for fixed-income financial products, offering greater opportunities for companies and local authorities to raise capital. According to IndexBox platform data, the bond market volumes in Asia have been steadily increasing, and this new linkage further solidifies the region's growth. On the inaugural day of the linkage, Macau saw the settlement of four new bond issuances valued at 3.2 billion patacas (US$401 million) via Hong Kong's Central Moneymarkets Unit (CMU), along with 18 transactions in the secondary market involving investors from both regions.

"The first day of operation for the connection of the two clearing houses has been very smooth," stated Benjamin Chan, chairman of the Monetary Authority of Macao, at the launch ceremony in Macau. "We expect there will be more institutional investors involved in the Macau debt markets after the linkage."

The establishment of this connection is expected to streamline cross-border investment, enabling investors to partake in each other's bond markets with increased efficiency, according to the Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA). HKMA's CEO, Eddie Yue Wai-man, emphasized Hong Kong's role as a "superconnector" in the region, highlighting that this development is a significant step towards establishing the CMU as an international Central Securities Depository in Asia.
