Hong Kong Banks Compete to Attract Mainland Visitors During Lunar New Year

Hong Kong's financial institutions are rolling out a series of enticing promotions to attract visitors from mainland China during the upcoming Lunar New Year celebrations. According to a report by South China Morning Post published on January 29, 2025, the city is preparing to welcome approximately 1.43 million mainlanders for the 'golden week' holiday, which runs from January 28 to February 4.

The annual 'golden week' holiday presents a lucrative opportunity for Hong Kong's major lenders such as HSBC, Standard Chartered, and Bank of China (Hong Kong), alongside digital banks like ZA Bank, Mox Bank, and WeLab Bank, to attract new clients. These banks have crafted a variety of offers, including cash rebates, lucky draws, and exclusive experiences to entice new account openings.

HSBC, the largest lender in Hong Kong, is particularly active this festive season as it celebrates its 160th anniversary. The bank is sponsoring the Lunar New Year fireworks on the second day of celebrations and hosting exclusive dinners with views of these spectacles at notable venues including Hysan Place and the Hong Kong Jockey Club in Sha Tin. Special dinners featuring feng shui masters are also planned at The Henderson Cloud 39 rooftop ballroom.

As part of its promotional strategy, HSBC is offering a HK$1,000 (US$128) gift card for spending at Rosewood Hotel to those who open a new account at its latest retail banking center at Hong Kong West Kowloon Railway Station. This is alongside a lucky draw open to all visitors of the center.
