Hong Kong Banks Face Slowest Profit Growth in Three Years Amid Rate Cuts

Hong Kong's banking sector is bracing for leaner times as it grapples with the slowest profit growth in three years, largely due to three rate cuts since September 2024 that have squeezed profit margins and reduced fee income from stock trading and wealth management. According to a report by the South China Morning Post, the aggregated pre-tax profit among the city's 30 retail banks increased by a mere 8.4 per cent in the first nine months of 2024, representing a significant slowdown from the 62 per cent growth recorded in 2023 and 18.7 per cent in 2022.

The narrowing net interest margin (NIM), which reflects the gap between what banks earn on loans and pay out on deposits, further highlights the challenging financial landscape. HKMA data shows that the NIM shrank to 1.5 per cent in the first nine months of 2024, down from 1.67 per cent in 2023. Historical data from the IndexBox platform indicates that the NIM stood at 1.31 per cent in 2022, 0.98 per cent in 2021, and 1.18 per cent in 2020.

Arthur Yuen Kwok-hang, Deputy CEO of the Hong Kong Monetary Authority, noted in a recent briefing that while bank profitability remained good, there is an increasing need to address bad debt issues and the rising trend of financial scams this year. The financial strains have been exacerbated by synchronized rate cuts between Hong Kong's de facto central bank and the US Federal Reserve, leading to a cumulative reduction of 62.5 basis points in the borrowing costs for prime customers at commercial banks since September.

In addition, the proportion of bad or doubtful loans has increased, reflecting the mounting challenges businesses face in a volatile economy. These loans amounted to 1.99 per cent of total lending as of September, a rise from 1.89 per cent in June and 1.5 per cent at the end of 2023, following a noticeable 0.88 per cent rate in 2021.
