Hong Kong Berry Imports
In 2023, berry imports into Hong Kong declined notably to 105K tons, waning by -59% on the previous year. In general, imports, however, recorded a strong increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 85% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at 317K tons in 2021; however, from 2022 to 2023, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, berry imports shrank notably to $725M (IndexBox estimates) in 2023. Overall, imports, however, saw a resilient expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 75% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $1.8B. From 2022 to 2023, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country
In 2023, Chile (77K tons) constituted the largest supplier of berry to Hong Kong, with a 73% share of total imports. Moreover, berry imports from Chile exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Peru (9.9K tons), eightfold. The third position in this ranking was taken by the United States (6.3K tons), with a 6% share.
From 2013 to 2023, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Chile totaled +13.2%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Peru (+41.1% per year) and the United States (-5.9% per year).
In value terms, Chile ($470M) constituted the largest supplier of berries to Hong Kong, comprising 65% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Peru ($64M), with an 8.8% share of total imports. It was followed by the United States, with a 6.2% share.
From 2013 to 2023, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Chile amounted to +13.9%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Peru (+41.7% per year) and the United States (-5.5% per year).
Imports by Type
In 2023, cherries and sour cherries (84K tons) constituted the largest type of berries supplied to Hong Kong, with a 80% share of total imports. Moreover, cherries and sour cherries exceeded the figures recorded for the second-largest type, blueberries and cranberries (15K tons), fivefold. The third position in this ranking was held by strawberries (5.5K tons), with a 5.2% share.
From 2013 to 2023, the average annual rate of growth in terms of the volume of cherries and sour cherries imports stood at +10.1%. With regard to the other supplied products, the following average annual rates of growth were recorded: blueberries and cranberries (+17.5% per year) and strawberries (-1.2% per year).
In value terms, cherries and sour cherries ($533M) constituted the largest type of berries supplied to Hong Kong, comprising 74% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by blueberries and cranberries ($112M), with a 15% share of total imports. It was followed by strawberries, with a 10% share.
Import Prices by Country
In 2023, the berry price amounted to $6,906 per ton (CIF, Hong Kong), rising by 12% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 an increase of 12%. The import price peaked in 2023 and is likely to see gradual growth in years to come.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2023, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Japan ($18,830 per ton), while the price for Chile ($6,115 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2013 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Australia (+5.6%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
