Significant Surge in Berry Imports in Hong Kong Reaches $22M in October 2023

In October 2023, berry imports into Hong Kong surged to 2.9K tons, with an increase of 18% compared with the previous month. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a pronounced decline. The growth pace was the most rapid in December 2022 when imports increased by 707% against the previous month.

In value terms, berry imports soared to $22M (IndexBox estimates) in October 2023. Overall, imports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in December 2022 with an increase of 669% m-o-m.Hong Kong Berry Imports By Country (Million USD)

Imports by Country

In October 2023, Peru (2.3K tons) constituted the largest berry supplier to Hong Kong, accounting for a 79% share of total imports. It was followed by Japan (1.4 tons), with less than 0.1% share of total imports.

From October 2022 to October 2023, the average monthly growth rate of volume from Peru amounted to -2.6%.

In value terms, Peru ($15M) constituted the largest supplier of berry to Hong Kong, comprising 68% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Japan ($17K), with a 0.1% share of total imports.

From October 2022 to October 2023, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of value from Peru amounted to -1.5%.

Imports by Type

In October 2023, blueberries and cranberries (2.7K tons) was the main type of berry supplied to Hong Kong, accounting for a 93% share of total imports. Moreover, blueberries and cranberries exceeded the figures recorded for the second-largest type, strawberries (177 tons), more than tenfold. The third position in this ranking was held by cherries and sour cherries (15 tons), with a 0.5% share.

From October 2022 to October 2023, the average monthly growth rate of the volume of import of blueberries and cranberries amounted to -2.3%. With regard to the other supplied products, the following average monthly rates of growth were recorded: strawberries (-0.4% per month) and cherries and sour cherries (+12.1% per month).

In value terms, blueberries and cranberries ($19M) constituted the largest type of berry supplied to Hong Kong, comprising 90% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by strawberries ($1.7M), with an 8% share of total imports. It was followed by cherries and sour cherries, with a 1.4% share.

Import Prices by Country

In October 2023, the berry price amounted to $7,429 per ton (CIF, Hong Kong), rising by 2% against the previous month. Over the period under review, import price indicated a mild increase from October 2022 to October 2023: its price increased at an average monthly rate of +1.5% over the last twelve-month period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on October 2023 figures, berry import price increased by +17.6% against August 2023 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in March 2023 an increase of 65% against the previous month. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $9,834 per ton. From April 2023 to October 2023, the average import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by the country of origin: the country with the highest price was Zimbabwe ($12,593 per ton), while the price for Peru ($6,376 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From October 2022 to October 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Chile (+8.8%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
