Hong Kongs Concrete Reinforcing Bar Sees Mild Increase to $626 per Ton

Hong Kong Concrete Reinforcing Bar Import Price in June 2023

In June 2023, the concrete reinforcing bar price stood at $626 per ton (CIF, Hong Kong), almost unchanged from the previous month. Over the period under review, the import price, however, recorded a slight curtailment. The growth pace was the most rapid in April 2023 when the average import price increased by 3.2% m-o-m. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the maximum at $779 per ton in June 2022; however, from July 2022 to June 2023, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major supplying countries. In June 2023, the countries with the highest prices were Saudi Arabia ($638 per ton) and Vietnam ($619 per ton), while the price for China ($598 per ton) and Malaysia ($615 per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From June 2022 to June 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Turkey (+2.7%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.

Hong Kong Concrete Reinforcing Bar Imports

In June 2023, imports of concrete reinforcing bars into Hong Kong totaled 220K tons, growing by 2.2% against May 2023. In general, total imports indicated a notable expansion from June 2022 to June 2023: its volume increased at an average monthly rate of +3.2% over the last twelve-month period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on June 2023 figures, imports decreased by -5.1% against April 2023 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in January 2023 with an increase of 68% against the previous month.

In value terms, concrete reinforcing bar imports totaled $138M (IndexBox estimates) in June 2023. Overall, total imports indicated a modest increase from June 2022 to June 2023: its value increased at an average monthly rate of +1.3% over the last twelve months. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on June 2023 figures, imports decreased by -6.3% against April 2023 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in January 2023 with an increase of 57% month-to-month.

Hong Kong Concrete Reinforcing Bar Imports by Country

Saudi Arabia (115K tons), Malaysia (77K tons) and Vietnam (16K tons) were the main suppliers of concrete reinforcing bar imports to Hong Kong, together comprising 94% of total imports.

From June 2022 to June 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Saudi Arabia (with a CAGR of +9.0%), while imports for the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.

In value terms, the largest concrete reinforcing bar suppliers to Hong Kong were Saudi Arabia ($73M), Malaysia ($47M) and Vietnam ($9.7M), with a combined 94% share of total imports.
