Hong Kong Dry Onion Import Price in May 2023
In May 2023, the dry onion price amounted to $1,165 per ton (CIF, Hong Kong), picking up by 23% against the previous month. Over the period under review, import price indicated slight growth from May 2022 to May 2023: its price increased at an average monthly rate of +1.6% over the last twelve-month period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on May 2023 figures, onion and shallot import price increased by +22.8% against April 2023 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in February 2023 when the average import price increased by 72% month-to-month. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $1,411 per ton. From March 2023 to May 2023, the average import prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In May 2023, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($4,675 per ton), while the price for China ($556 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From May 2022 to May 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by New Zealand (+3.1%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.

Hong Kong Dry Onion Imports
After two months of growth, overseas purchases of onions and shallots decreased by -32.6% to 241 tons in May 2023. In general, imports saw a abrupt decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in September 2022 when imports increased by 63% m-o-m. As a result, imports reached the peak of 793 tons. From October 2022 to May 2023, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, onion and shallot imports plummeted to $281K (IndexBox estimates) in May 2023. Over the period under review, imports showed a pronounced setback. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in December 2022 when imports increased by 53% against the previous month.
Hong Kong Dry Onion Imports by Country
New Zealand (105 tons), China (75 tons) and Australia (40 tons) were the main suppliers of onion and shallot imports to Hong Kong, together comprising 92% of total imports. These countries were followed by Japan, the United States and the Netherlands, which together accounted for a further 7.3%.
From May 2022 to May 2023, the biggest increases were in the Netherlands (with a CAGR of -0.6%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced a decline.
In value terms, New Zealand ($120K) constituted the largest supplier of onion and shallot to Hong Kong, comprising 43% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Australia ($51K), with an 18% share of total imports. It was followed by China, with a 15% share.
From May 2022 to May 2023, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of value from New Zealand amounted to -3.4%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average monthly rates of imports growth: Australia (-8.8% per month) and China (+0.1% per month).
