Hong Kong Egg Product Imports
Egg product imports into Hong Kong shrank to 2.4K tons in 2023, with a decrease of -11.1% against 2022 figures. Overall, imports continue to indicate a perceptible setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 28% against the previous year. Imports peaked at 3.4K tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2023, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, egg product imports shrank slightly to $11M (IndexBox estimates) in 2023. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +1.6% over the period from 2013 to 2023; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 60% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $13M. From 2022 to 2023, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country
China (1K tons), Japan (509 tons) and Australia (348 tons) were the main suppliers of egg product imports to Hong Kong, together accounting for 78% of total imports. Malaysia, Denmark, Italy, the United States and Belgium lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 20%.
From 2013 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Malaysia (with a CAGR of +55.6%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, China ($6.2M) constituted the largest supplier of egg products to Hong Kong, comprising 54% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Japan ($2.2M), with a 19% share of total imports. It was followed by Australia, with a 9.3% share.

The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2023 figures, egg product import price increased by +59.8% against 2017 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 an increase of 25%. The import price peaked in 2023 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was China ($6,080 per ton), while the price for Australia ($3,022 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
