Hong Kong Exchange Fund's Resilient Performance Amid Q4 Loss

The Hong Kong Exchange Fund, known as the financial safeguard of the territory for its currency, has announced a 3% decline in returns for 2024, amounting to HK$219 billion (US$28 billion), as highlighted by the South China Morning Post. Despite this decline, news from IndexBox confirms it was its fifth-strongest annual performance to date.

The substantial drop primarily resulted from a HK$20.1 billion loss in the fourth quarter, which halted a streak of four profitably consistent quarters. From October to December, there was a significant HK$6.7 billion loss in Hong Kong equities and a HK$27.4 billion depreciation in foreign exchange valuations. These losses overshadowed gains amounting to HK$11.3 billion in bonds and HK$2.7 billion in overseas equities.

Eddie Yue Wai-man, CEO of the Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA), attributed the downturn to decreasing bond prices and weaker stock market performance during this period. Additionally, fluctuations in the US dollar posed challenges to the fund's overall returns.

In spite of these setbacks, the total assets under the Exchange Fund increased by HK$65.9 billion, reaching HK$4.082 trillion by the end of the preceding year. This growth is indicative of a robust diversified investment strategy, which continues to bolster the fund's resilience amidst volatility.
