Price of Fish Parts in Hong Kong Rises to $82.8 per kg

Hong Kong Fish Parts Import Price in May 2023

In May 2023, the fish parts price amounted to $82,829 per ton (CIF, Hong Kong), picking up by 27% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the import price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $90,212 per ton in May 2022; however, from June 2022 to May 2023, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by the country of origin: the country with the highest price was Tanzania ($249K per ton), while the price for Vietnam ($34,573 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From May 2022 to May 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Suriname (+21.2%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

Hong Kong Fish Parts Imports

In May 2023, imports of fish heads, tails and maws into Hong Kong declined markedly to 389 tons, which is down by -18.9% against the month before. The total import volume increased at an average monthly rate of +1.1% over the period from May 2022 to May 2023; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in March 2023 with an increase of 42% m-o-m.

In value terms, fish parts imports rose to $32M (IndexBox estimates) in May 2023. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in March 2023 with an increase of 34% against the previous month. As a result, imports attained the peak of $39M. From April 2023 to May 2023, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

Hong Kong Fish Parts Imports by Country

Brazil (45 tons), Peru (28 tons) and Tanzania (27 tons) were the main suppliers of fish parts imports to Hong Kong, together accounting for 26% of total imports. Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Uganda, Vietnam, India, Taiwan (Chinese), Mexico, Oman, Suriname and Costa Rica lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 54%.

From May 2022 to May 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Oman (with a CAGR of +14.4%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest fish parts suppliers to Hong Kong were Tanzania ($6.8M), Uganda ($5.4M) and Brazil ($2.3M), with a combined 45% share of total imports. India, Taiwan (Chinese), Peru, Mexico, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Vietnam, Suriname, Costa Rica and Oman lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 37%.

In terms of the main suppliers, Oman, with a CAGR of +31.5%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
