Hong Kong's Import of Ice Cream Drops to $3.3M Following Three Straight Months of Contraction in October 2023

Hong Kong Ice Cream Imports

For the third consecutive month, Hong Kong recorded decline in overseas purchases of ice cream, which decreased by -21.1% to 607 tons in October 2023. Over the period under review, imports showed a slight slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in March 2023 when imports increased by 139% against the previous month.

In value terms, ice cream imports contracted dramatically to $3.3M (IndexBox estimates) in October 2023. Overall, imports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. Imports by Country

France (162 tons), China (125 tons) and Japan (121 tons) were the main suppliers of ice cream imports to Hong Kong, with a combined 67% share of total imports.

From October 2022 to October 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by China (with a CAGR of +4.0%), while imports for the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.

In value terms, the largest ice cream suppliers to Hong Kong were France ($1.1M), Japan ($770K) and China ($417K), with a combined 71% share of total imports.

Among the main suppliers, China, with a CAGR of +6.0%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In October 2023, the ice cream price stood at $5,389 per ton (CIF, Hong Kong), leveling off at the previous month. Overall, the import price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in July 2023 when the average import price increased by 25% m-o-m. The import price peaked at $5,757 per ton in February 2023; however, from March 2023 to October 2023, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by the country of origin: the country with the highest price was Switzerland ($8,708 per ton), while the price for Australia ($3,320 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From October 2022 to October 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by France (+2.7%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
