Hong Kongs Imports of Mushrooms and Truffles Decrease to $1.4M in November 2023

Hong Kong Mushroom And Truffle Imports

In November 2023, the amount of mushrooms and truffles imported into Hong Kong declined to 791 tons, shrinking by -9.7% against the month before. Overall, imports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in August 2023 when imports increased by 36% m-o-m. As a result, imports reached the peak of 912 tons. From September 2023 to November 2023, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, mushroom and truffle imports fell to $1.4M (IndexBox estimates) in November 2023. Over the period under review, imports recorded a perceptible curtailment. Imports by Country

In November 2023, China (570 tons) constituted the largest mushroom and truffle supplier to Hong Kong, with a 72% share of total imports. Moreover, mushroom and truffle imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, South Korea (102 tons), sixfold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Japan (47 tons), with a 6% share.

From November 2022 to November 2023, the average monthly growth rate of volume from China was relatively modest. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average monthly rates of imports growth: South Korea (-2.4% per month) and Japan (-3.0% per month).

In value terms, the largest mushroom and truffle suppliers to Hong Kong were China ($395K), South Korea ($206K) and Japan ($206K), together accounting for 59% of total imports. The Netherlands and Taiwan (Chinese) lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 15%.

Among the main suppliers, the Netherlands, with a CAGR of +5.2%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced a decline.

Import Prices by Country

In November 2023, the mushroom and truffle price stood at $1,729 per ton (CIF, Hong Kong), picking up by 2.2% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the import price, however, continues to indicate a mild reduction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in July 2023 an increase of 35% against the previous month. The import price peaked at $2,158 per ton in November 2022; however, from December 2022 to November 2023, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In November 2023, the country with the highest price was Japan ($4,363 per ton), while the price for China ($693 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From November 2022 to November 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Netherlands (+1.0%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.
