Hong Kong Witnesses Decrease in Passenger Car Price to $38,984 per Unit

Hong Kong Passenger Car Import Price in June 2023

In June 2023, the passenger car price amounted to $38,984 per unit (CIF, Hong Kong), shrinking by -5.1% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the import price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in March 2023 when the average import price increased by 17% against the previous month. The import price peaked at $44,977 per unit in August 2022; however, from September 2022 to June 2023, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by the country of origin: the country with the highest price was Germany ($60,903 per unit), while the price for Japan ($22,050 per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From June 2022 to June 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Korea (+2.3%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

Hong Kong Passenger Car Imports

In June 2023, approximately 4.5K units of passenger cars were imported into Hong Kong; declining by -15.6% compared with May 2023. Overall, total imports indicated a moderate expansion from June 2022 to June 2023: its volume increased at an average monthly rate of +2.4% over the last twelve-month period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on June 2023 figures, imports decreased by -15.6% against May 2023 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in January 2023 when imports increased by 70% against the previous month. Imports peaked at 5.5K units in August 2022; however, from September 2022 to June 2023, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, passenger car imports declined markedly to $174M (IndexBox estimates) in June 2023. In general, total imports indicated moderate growth from June 2022 to June 2023: its value increased at an average monthly rate of +2.9% over the last twelve-month period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on June 2023 figures, imports decreased by -19.9% against May 2023 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in January 2023 with an increase of 77% month-to-month. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at 246M units in August 2022; however, from September 2022 to June 2023, imports remained at a lower figure.

Hong Kong Passenger Car Imports by Country

Japan (1.6K units), China (1.5K units) and Slovenia (545 units) were the main suppliers of passenger car imports to Hong Kong, with a combined 81% share of total imports.

From June 2022 to June 2023, the biggest increases were in China (with a CAGR of +5.8%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, China ($61M), Japan ($34M) and Germany ($28M) constituted the largest passenger car suppliers to Hong Kong, with a combined 71% share of total imports.

China, with a CAGR of +4.6%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
