Hong Kong Synthetic Yarn Exports
For the tenth year in a row, Hong Kong recorded decline in shipments abroad of yarn of synthetic or artificial staple fibers, which decreased by -3.1% to 4.7K tons in 2023. Overall, exports saw a precipitous descent. The smallest decline of -2.7% was in 2018. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at 59K tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2023, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, synthetic yarn exports rose modestly to $42M (IndexBox estimates) in 2023. In general, exports faced a precipitous decrease. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $442M in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2023, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country
China (3.7K tons) was the main destination for synthetic yarn exports from Hong Kong, with a 79% share of total exports. Moreover, synthetic yarn exports to China exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Vietnam (467 tons), eightfold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Cambodia (266 tons), with a 5.7% share.
From 2013 to 2023, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to China amounted to -23.7%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Vietnam (+1.8% per year) and Cambodia (-17.9% per year).
In value terms, China ($32M) remains the key foreign market for yarn of synthetic or artificial staple fibers exports from Hong Kong, comprising 76% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Vietnam ($5.2M), with a 12% share of total exports. It was followed by Cambodia, with a 3.9% share.
From 2013 to 2023, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to China amounted to -22.7%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Vietnam (+10.6% per year) and Cambodia (-16.6% per year).

Yarn (other than sewing thread) of synthetic staple fibres, not put up for retail sale (2.8K tons), yarn (other than sewing thread) of artificial staple fibres, not put up for retail sale (1.9K tons) and yarn (not sewing thread), of man-made staple fibres, put up for retail sale (2.4 tons) were the main products of synthetic yarn exports from Hong Kong.
From 2013 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the major product types, was attained by yarn (other than sewing thread) of artificial staple fibres, not put up for retail sale (with a CAGR of -19.2%), while the other products experienced a decline.
In value terms, yarn (other than sewing thread) of synthetic staple fibres, not put up for retail sale ($25M), yarn (other than sewing thread) of artificial staple fibres, not put up for retail sale ($17M) and yarn (not sewing thread), of man-made staple fibres, put up for retail sale ($15K) were the most exported types of yarn of synthetic or artificial staple fibers from Hong Kong worldwide.
In terms of the main product categories, yarn (other than sewing thread) of artificial staple fibres, not put up for retail sale, with a CAGR of -16.4%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other products experienced a decline.
Export Prices by Country
In 2023, the synthetic yarn price amounted to $8,912 per ton (FOB, Hong Kong), rising by 7.1% against the previous year. Over the period from 2013 to 2023, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.7%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of 9.6%. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the maximum in 2023 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2023, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Vietnam ($11,079 per ton), while the average price for exports to Cambodia ($6,209 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2013 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Vietnam (+8.6%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
