Hong Kong Wine Imports
Wine imports into Hong Kong reduced to 31M litres in 2023, dropping by -10.3% against the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a noticeable reduction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when imports increased by 20% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of 64M litres. From 2016 to 2023, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, wine imports contracted to $971M (IndexBox estimates) in 2023. In general, imports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 41%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $1.6B in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2023, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country
Australia (8.4M litres), France (7.2M litres) and the United States (2.6M litres) were the main suppliers of wine imports to Hong Kong, together accounting for 58% of total imports. Italy, Singapore, the UK and China lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 20%.
From 2013 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Singapore (with a CAGR of +8.5%), while imports for the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.
In value terms, France ($391M) constituted the largest supplier of wine and grape must to Hong Kong, comprising 40% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by the UK ($135M), with a 14% share of total imports. It was followed by Australia, with an 11% share.
From 2013 to 2023, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from France was relatively modest. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the UK (-4.6% per year) and Australia (+3.5% per year).
Imports by Type
In 2023, wine of fresh grapes (except sparkling wine) (29M litres) was the main type of wine and grape must supplied to Hong Kong, with a 91% share of total imports. Moreover, wine of fresh grapes (except sparkling wine) exceeded the figures recorded for the second-largest type, sparkling wine (2.6M litres), more than tenfold.
From 2013 to 2023, the average annual rate of growth in terms of the volume of wine of fresh grapes (except sparkling wine) imports totaled -5.0%. With regard to the other supplied products, the following average annual rates of growth were recorded: sparkling wine (+1.4% per year) and grape must (-16.4% per year).
In value terms, wine of fresh grapes (except sparkling wine) ($885M) constituted the largest type of wine and grape must supplied to Hong Kong, comprising 91% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by sparkling wine ($85M), with an 8.7% share of total imports.
Import Prices by Country
In 2023, the wine price stood at $31 per litre (CIF, Hong Kong), growing by 6% against the previous year. Overall, import price indicated a temperate expansion from 2013 to 2023: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2023 figures, wine import price decreased by -6.7% against 2021 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the average import price increased by 19% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $33 per litre. From 2022 to 2023, the average import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2023, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the UK ($125 per litre), while the price for Chile ($6 per litre) was amongst the lowest.
