Hong Kong's Import of Wine and Grape Must Falls Dramatically to $620M in 2024

For the third consecutive year, Hong Kong recorded decline in overseas purchases of wine and grape must, which decreased by -27.7% to 23M litres in 2024. Overall, imports showed a abrupt setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when imports increased by 20% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of 64M litres. From 2016 to 2024, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, wine and grape must imports reduced dramatically to $620M (IndexBox estimates) in 2024. In general, imports showed a abrupt decline. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when imports increased by 41%. Imports by Country

Australia (6.6M litres), France (5.1M litres) and Italy (1.7M litres) were the main suppliers of wine and grape must imports to Hong Kong, together accounting for 59% of total imports. the United States, Singapore, China and the UK lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 20%.

From 2014 to 2024, the biggest increases were recorded for Singapore (with a CAGR of +1.2%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced a decline.

In value terms, France ($238M) constituted the largest supplier of wine and grape must to Hong Kong, comprising 38% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the UK ($92M), with a 15% share of total imports. It was followed by Australia, with a 14% share.

From 2014 to 2024, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from France totaled -3.6%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the UK (-8.3% per year) and Australia (-0.3% per year).

Imports by Type

In 2024, wine of fresh grapes (except sparkling wine) (21M litres) was the main type of wine and grape must supplied to Hong Kong, accounting for a 91% share of total imports. Moreover, wine of fresh grapes (except sparkling wine) exceeded the figures recorded for the second-largest type, sparkling wine (1.8M litres), more than tenfold.

From 2014 to 2024, the average annual rate of growth in terms of the volume of wine of fresh grapes (except sparkling wine) imports totaled -8.5%. With regard to the other supplied products, the following average annual rates of growth were recorded: sparkling wine (-2.5% per year) and grape must (-16.1% per year).

In value terms, wine of fresh grapes (except sparkling wine) ($565M) constituted the largest type of wine and grape must supplied to Hong Kong, comprising 91% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by sparkling wine ($53M), with an 8.6% share of total imports.

Import Prices by Country

In 2024, the wine price amounted to $27 per litre (CIF, Hong Kong), with a decrease of -11.8% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.9%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when the average import price increased by 19% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $33 per litre. From 2022 to 2024, the average import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the UK ($124 per litre), while the price for Chile ($4.7 per litre) was amongst the lowest.

From 2014 to 2024, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the United States (+9.1%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
