Hungary Maintains High Interest Rates Amid Inflation Pressure

In a decisive move to curb rising inflation, Hungary's central bank has held its main interest rate at 6.5% for the fourth consecutive month. This decision aligns with the expectations of all 25 economists surveyed by Bloomberg, which reported on the country's monetary stance. The detailed report, which can be accessed here, highlights Hungary's struggle with inflation, matching Romania for the highest key rate within the European Union.

Deputy Governor Barnabas Virag indicated that headline price growth surged to an annual rate of 4.6% in December, surpassing the central bank's latest forecasts. He added that inflation could reach around 5% in January, advocating for "strong anti-inflationary" measures, which include maintaining the current interest rate.

According to data from the IndexBox platform, these monetary decisions come amidst a challenging economic backdrop, with the forint weakening by 4.6% against the euro in the final months of 2024 before a slight recovery in 2025. This depreciation has been a significant driver of inflationary pressure within the Hungarian economy.

Despite some market speculation about potential rate cuts later in the year due to recent currency gains, OTP Bank Nyrt., Hungary's largest lender, speculates that the central bank will have limited scope to reduce rates throughout the year due to persistent inflation concerns. The central bank aims to achieve a 3% inflation target with a 1 percentage point tolerance by 2026.

Amid this economic turbulence, Economy Minister Marton Nagy has advocated for a more relaxed monetary policy to stimulate growth, especially following the third quarter's return to recession. However, with Mihaly Varga set to take over as the central bank chief in March, continuity in current monetary policy seems likely as Hungary navigates its complex economic landscape.
