Hungary's Central Bank Maintains Interest Rate Amid Inflation Concerns

The National Bank of Hungary (NBH) has decided to maintain its key interest rate at 6.5%, adhering to one of the European Union's highest levels after inflation showed an upward trend, and the Hungarian forint hovered near a multi-year low against the euro. Bloomberg reports that this decision marks the third consecutive month the rate has been held steady, aligning with predictions from all 22 economists surveyed.

The Hungarian central bank's stance comes amidst heightened market anticipation regarding potential changes in monetary policy, as Prime Minister Viktor Orban has nominated Finance Minister Mihaly Varga to replace Governor Gyorgy Matolcsy starting March. During a recent parliamentary hearing, Varga expressed his commitment to achieving the central bank's inflation target of 3% and ensuring a stable exchange rate.

November's inflation rate increased to 3.7% annually, up from October's 3.2%, largely fueled by a 7% rise in service costs. Concerns are mounting among policymakers about the possibility of inflation expectations becoming entrenched at elevated levels following Hungary's record inflation exceeding 25% at the beginning of last year.

Despite calls from Economy Minister Marton Nagy for rate cuts to aid recovery from recession, the central bank has cited ongoing geopolitical tensions, market volatility, and persistent inflation risks as reasons for keeping the interest rate unchanged. Furthermore, the government has highlighted a rising disparity with Western central banks, which have generally been reducing rates to support struggling economies.

This stable interest rate stands in contrast to the backdrop of the forint's depreciation, which has compelled the NBH to retract its brief attempt at monetary easing in September. The Hungarian currency has witnessed a decline of over 6% against the euro and approximately 11% against the dollar over the current year.

A later briefing by Deputy Governor Barnabas Virag is scheduled at 3 p.m. in Budapest to release the NBH's updated inflation and economic growth forecasts.
