Huntington Bancshares Reports More Than Two-Fold Surge in Fourth-Quarter Profit

In a significant financial upturn, Huntington Bancshares has reported a remarkable more than two-fold increase in its fourth-quarter profit, largely attributed to the stellar performance of its capital markets division and heightened interest income. Reuters highlighted that the bank's strategic diversification into fee-earning businesses, beyond traditional lending, has yielded substantial returns. This move has been well-timed as companies aggressively engaged in stock and bond sales and actively pursued deals, substantially boosting the fees charged by lenders for these transactions.

Within this period, capital markets and advisory fees soared by 74% to reach $120 million, while wealth and asset management revenue saw an 8% increase, amounting to $93 million in the fourth quarter ending December 31. Consequently, the company's profit surged to $530 million, or 34 cents per share, a significant rise from the previous year's $243 million, or 15 cents per share. This impressive financial performance has surpassed analysts' expectations of 31 cents, as compiled by LSEG.

This financial victory has resulted in a favorable market response, with shares of the company climbing 1.5% in premarket trading. Experts in the banking sector project global deal volumes to exceed $4 trillion by 2025, driven by the U.S. President-elect's regulatory relaxations, corporate tax cuts, and overall pro-business policies.

Additionally, Huntington Bancshares anticipates its net interest income (NII) to ascend by 4% to 6% in 2025, setting a new record for the institution. This outlook is supported by potential strong loan growth and a gradual adjustment of deposit costs in response to additional interest rate reductions by the Federal Reserve. The bank's NII has already risen by 6% in the reported quarter, reaching $1.39 billion.

Steve Steinour, Chairman and CEO, emphasized, "We delivered exceptional fourth-quarter results highlighted by record fee income, accelerated loan growth, and sustained deposit gathering," underscoring the bank's strategic accomplishments.
