Hydrogen Fueling Facility to Boost Clean Energy Transition Near Port of Savannah

A new $33 million hydrogen production and fueling station aims to revolutionize logistics near the bustling Port of Savannah, according to Yahoo Finance. Hydrogen specialist HydroFleet, based in Charlotte, North Carolina, in partnership with Glovis America, plans to establish this facility in Pooler, Georgia.

Initially, the facility is set to accommodate refueling for seven to 14 heavy-duty hydrogen fuel cell trucks daily, with a future goal of supporting up to 50 trucks per day. This initiative aligns with operations by Hyundai Motor Group Metaplant America, which began deploying its Hyundai Xcient trucks - a fleet of 21 - for logistics in December.

The Port of Savannah, the second-largest port on the East Coast and fourth in the U.S. by volume, handled over 2.8 million TEUs from July to December 2024, an 11.4% increase from the previous year. The port managed approximately 3 million truck pickups and drop-offs in 2023, highlighting the logistics potential of the new facility.

Scott Moe, CEO of HydroFleet, stated, "Pooler is an ideal location for HydroFleet's facility due to its proximity to major interstates, the Port of Savannah, and prospective fleet customers. We know customers want zero-emission fleets but have struggled to source the entire hydrogen ecosystem at a price that is competitive."

The environmental impact of switching from diesel to hydrogen fuel cell trucks is significant. Each Class 8 diesel truck replaced with a hydrogen counterpart removes over 400 metric tons of CO2 emissions annually. At projected full capacity, the Pooler facility's supported fleet could eliminate over 40,000 metric tons of CO2 emissions from the Savannah area each year.
