Hyundai Steel Considers New U.S. Plant Amid Changing Trade Policies
South Korea's Hyundai Steel, a key subsidiary of automakers Hyundai Motor and Kia, is actively weighing the option of establishing a steel production facility in the southeastern United States. As reported by GMK Center, this strategic move comes in light of anticipated escalations in protectionist trade measures under the leadership of U.S. President Donald Trump, including a looming 25% tariff on imports from neighboring Mexico and Canada starting February next year.
The prospective plant will focus on leveraging electric arc furnace technology, aligning with Hyundai Steel's ongoing international expansion strategies amid increasing global demand for low-carbon steel products. The initiative aligns with their broader environmental goals, highlighted by recent partnerships with European firms to boost their low-carbon plate sales.
Hyundai Motor and Kia currently operate automobile manufacturing plants in Alabama and Georgia, positioning the new facility to conveniently supply flat steel products to these U.S.-based operations. Reflecting on the current U.S. steel market, the export value of flat-rolled steel coils reached USD 2 billion in 2024, up from USD 1.9 billion in 2023, as per data from the IndexBox platform.
Despite growing exports, the United States imported USD 3.7 billion worth of flat-rolled steel coils in 2024, an increase from USD 3.6 billion in 2023. Canada remains the largest import source, contributing USD 1.9 billion in 2023 alone, followed by significant imports from countries like Mexico and South Korea, amounting to USD 407.3 million and USD 401.8 million respectively.
