Impact of Los Angeles Wildfires on U.S. Economy

J.P. Morgan economist Abiel Reinhart described the L.A. wildfires as potentially the costliest climate disaster in U.S. history, citing both their vast size and the considerable value of the residential real estate being destroyed. Although estimates place economic damages at around a quarter billion dollars, Reinhart believes the short-term effects on the national GDP, employment, and inflation will remain limited.

Economists from Goldman Sachs anticipate a 0.2 percentage point drag on first-quarter growth unless offset by rebuilding-related activities. They project a reduction in January job growth by 15,000 to 25,000 positions due to the fires, which is minor compared to the 256,000 jobs added in December 2024. Despite the fires, immediate unemployment insurance claims are not expected to spike, given that only about 0.5% of California residents faced evacuation orders.

Morgan Stanley analysts share a similar outlook, projecting a drag between 20,000 and 40,000 on job creation figures. They foresee inflationary pressures, particularly on used and new car prices, with inflation potentially rising by four to nine basis points as a result of the wildfires.

Reinhart further anticipates localized inflation pressures on rents, construction supplies, and residential construction labor, with minimal national ramifications. As the U.S. economy steps into 2025 with strong momentum and persistent inflation levels, these fires contribute to an already high level of economic uncertainty, compounded by the recent political shift with Donald Trump's return as president, advocating for significant tariff hikes and widespread deportation of undocumented immigrants.
