According to a recent report, eggs have become a major contributor to inflationary pressures, with prices surging 3.2% in December alone. This comes amidst a year where "eggflation" has notably accounted for nearly 1.5% of the overall inflation rate.

The impact on household budgets is clear as the price of a dozen large, grade-A eggs reached an average of $4.15 in December — marking a substantial 65% increase from the previous year. This surge is primarily attributed to an avian influenza outbreak that has severely affected poultry farms, leading to the loss of millions of egg-laying hens.

Despite the economic strain on consumers, the US egg industry has seen significant financial gains. Cal-Maine Foods, the nation's largest egg producer, reported an 80% increase in sales in its latest fiscal quarter, illustrating the dichotomy of rising profits for producers amid consumer challenges.

Export Highlights Amid Rising Prices

Data from the IndexBox platform highlights the dynamics within the US egg market. In 2023, the export value of chicken eggs from the United States stood at $565.2 million, which increased to $570.9 million by 2024. Canada and Mexico were the top recipients, accounting for $213.5 million and $147.5 million of US egg exports in 2024, respectively. Meanwhile, Jamaica, Brazil, and Trinidad and Tobago also featured prominently in the export data.
