Increase in Global Interest in Onshore Chinese Bonds as Repo Collateral

Global investors are demonstrating a robust interest in utilizing onshore Chinese bonds as collateral for short-term borrowing agreements in Hong Kong, enhancing the city's status as a premier offshore yuan hub. This new financial arrangement was initiated on Monday and is part of a comprehensive set of policy measures introduced by central banks from mainland China and Hong Kong, intended to deepen cross-border financial integration.

The IndexBox platform reports that this move is expected to play a critical role in easing capital flow restrictions and is particularly aimed at assisting foreign investors in obtaining better returns while adeptly managing liquidity. Several financial institutions, including Citic Securities International Capital Management, GF Global Capital, and Eastfort Asset Management, have already participated in offshore yuan repo transactions using their onshore Chinese bonds. This operation is conducted under the northbound Bond Connect scheme, as confirmed by Standard Chartered, one of the 11 market makers of the program in Hong Kong.

The new programme is set to enable clients to acquire yuan liquidity effectively, revitalizing foreign investors' onshore bond positions and enhancing the capital efficiency of yuan assets significantly. It further strengthens Hong Kong's leadership as an offshore yuan business center, remarked John Thang, head of markets and strategic client management and solutions for Hong Kong, Greater China, and North Asia at Standard Chartered.

Thang also mentioned the bank has observed numerous inquiries from customers eager to participate. "The new repo arrangement is anticipated to emerge as a regular financial tool for investors dealing with yuan assets," he added.
