Cotton Fabric Price in India Rises 2%, Averaging $13.2 per Square Meter

India Cotton Fabric Export Price in February 2023

In February 2023, the cotton fabric price amounted to $13.2 per square meter (FOB, India), growing by 2.3% against the previous month. In general, the export price continues to indicate a temperate increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in May 2022 when the average export price increased by 22% against the previous month. The export price peaked at $16.5 per square meter in October 2022; however, from November 2022 to February 2023, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In February 2023, the country with the highest price was Sri Lanka ($21.9 per square meter), while the average price for exports to Morocco ($4.8 per square meter) was amongst the lowest.

From February 2022 to February 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Mexico (+6.5%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

India Cotton Fabric Export Prices by Type

As there is only one major exported type of cotton fabric, the average price level is determined by prices for woven fabrics of cotton, containing 85% or more by weight of cotton, weighing more than 200g/m2.

From February 2022 to February 2023, the rate of growth in terms of prices for woven fabrics of cotton, containing 85% or more by weight of cotton, weighing more than 200g/m2 amounted to +0.3% per month.

India Cotton Fabric Exports

In February 2023, overseas shipments of woven fabrics of cotton decreased by -1.2% to 13M square meters for the first time since November 2022, thus ending a two-month declining trend. Overall, exports saw a abrupt slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in November 2022 with an increase of 30% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at 26M square meters in February 2022; however, from March 2022 to February 2023, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, cotton fabric exports amounted to $170M (IndexBox estimates) in February 2023. Over the period under review, exports recorded a pronounced decline. The growth pace was the most rapid in January 2023 when exports increased by 1,363% m-o-m. The exports peaked at 239M square meters in February 2022; however, from March 2022 to February 2023, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Woven fabrics of cotton, containing 85% or more by weight of cotton, weighing more than 200g/m2 (13M square meters) was the largest type of cotton fabric exported from India, with a approximately 100% share of total exports.

From February 2022 to February 2023, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of the volume of export of woven fabrics of cotton, containing 85% or more by weight of cotton, weighing more than 200g/m2 stood at -5.7%.

In value terms, woven fabrics of cotton, containing 85% or more by weight of cotton, weighing not more than 200 g/m2 ($113M) remains the largest type of cotton fabric exported from India, comprising 66% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by woven fabrics of cotton, containing 85% or more by weight of cotton, weighing more than 200g/m2 ($34M), with a 20% share of total exports. It was followed by woven fabrics of cotton, containing less than 85% by weight of cotton, mixed mainly or solely with man-made fibres, weighing more than 200g/m2, with a 7.9% share.

From February 2022 to February 2023, the average monthly growth rate of the export volume of woven fabrics of cotton, containing 85% or more by weight of cotton, weighing not more than 200 g/m2 amounted to -1.1%. With regard to the other exported products, the following average monthly rates of growth were recorded: woven fabrics of cotton, containing 85% or more by weight of cotton, weighing more than 200g/m2 (-5.3% per month) and woven fabrics of cotton, containing less than 85% by weight of cotton, mixed mainly or solely with man-made fibres, weighing more than 200g/m2 (-7.4% per month).

India Cotton Fabric Exports by Country

Bangladesh (5.8M square meters) was the main destination for cotton fabric exports from India, with a 45% share of total exports. Moreover, cotton fabric exports to Bangladesh exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, the United States (1.1M square meters), sixfold. Sri Lanka (701K square meters) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 5.4% share.

From February 2022 to February 2023, the average monthly growth rate of volume to Bangladesh amounted to -5.6%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average monthly rates of exports growth: the United States (-1.6% per month) and Sri Lanka (-4.2% per month).

In value terms, Bangladesh ($36M) remains the key foreign market for cotton fabric exports from India, comprising 21% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Sri Lanka ($15M), with a 9.1% share of total exports. It was followed by the United States, with a 3.8% share.

From February 2022 to February 2023, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of value to Bangladesh totaled -4.6%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average monthly rates of exports growth: Sri Lanka (-2.6% per month) and the United States (-1.6% per month).
