India Margarine And Shortening Export Price in November 2022
In November 2022, the margarine and shortening price amounted to $3,882 per ton (FOB, India), waning by -14.7% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the export price continues to indicate a perceptible downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in October 2022 an increase of 53% m-o-m. The export price peaked at $5,635 per ton in November 2021; however, from December 2021 to November 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In November 2022, the country with the highest price was Bhutan ($5,713 per ton), while the average price for exports to Sri Lanka ($1,005 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From November 2021 to November 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the UK (+18.8%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

India Margarine And Shortening Export Prices by Type
Average prices varied somewhat for the major types of exported product. In November 2022, the product with the highest price was liquid margarine and edible mixtures of animal or vegetable fats ($4,051 per ton), while the average price for exports of margarine (excluding liquid) stood at $2,769 per ton.
From November 2021 to November 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for the following types: margarine (excluding liquid) (+2.6%).
India Margarine And Shortening Exports
Margarine and shortening exports from India soared to 150 tons in November 2022, surging by 85% on the previous month. Overall, exports continue to indicate prominent growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in September 2022 with an increase of 540% against the previous month. The exports peaked at 351 tons in June 2022; however, from July 2022 to November 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, margarine and shortening exports surged to $583K (IndexBox estimates) in November 2022. In general, exports posted moderate growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in September 2022 when exports increased by 537% month-to-month. The exports peaked at 1.2K tons in June 2022; however, from July 2022 to November 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
India Margarine And Shortening Exports by Type
Liquid margarine and edible mixtures of animal or vegetable fats (130 tons) was the largest type of margarine and shortening exported from India, accounting for a 87% share of total exports. Moreover, liquid margarine and edible mixtures of animal or vegetable fats exceeded the volume of the second product type, margarine (excluding liquid) (20 tons), sevenfold.
From November 2021 to November 2022, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of the volume of export of liquid margarine and edible mixtures of animal or vegetable fats totaled +10.2%.
In value terms, liquid margarine and edible mixtures of animal or vegetable fats ($528K) remains the largest type of margarine and shortening exported from India, comprising 91% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by margarine (excluding liquid) ($55K), with a 9.4% share of total exports.
From November 2021 to November 2022, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of the export volume of liquid margarine and edible mixtures of animal or vegetable fats totaled +4.4%.
India Margarine And Shortening Exports by Country
Nepal (66 tons) was the main destination for margarine and shortening exports from India, with a 44% share of total exports. Moreover, margarine and shortening exports to Nepal exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Saudi Arabia (25 tons), threefold. The United Arab Emirates (23 tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 15% share.
From November 2021 to November 2022, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of volume to Nepal totaled +4.5%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average monthly rates of exports growth: Saudi Arabia (-0.4% per month) and the United Arab Emirates (+11.3% per month).
In value terms, Nepal ($298K) emerged as the key foreign market for margarine and shortening exports from India, comprising 51% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Saudi Arabia ($97K), with a 17% share of total exports. It was followed by Bhutan, with a 16% share.
From November 2021 to November 2022, the average monthly growth rate of value to Nepal totaled +3.1%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average monthly rates of exports growth: Saudi Arabia (+2.7% per month) and Bhutan (+3.8% per month).
