India Recovered Paper Imports
In July 2023, the amount of recovered paper imported into India rose notably to 588K tons, with an increase of 10% on June 2023. In general, imports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in November 2022 with an increase of 50% against the previous month.
In value terms, recovered paper imports expanded to $102M (IndexBox estimates) in July 2023. Overall, imports, however, saw a abrupt decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in November 2022 when imports increased by 37% month-to-month.

Imports by Country
The United States (191K tons), the UK (103K tons) and Italy (65K tons) were the main suppliers of recovered paper imports to India, together accounting for 61% of total imports.
From July 2022 to July 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Italy (with a CAGR of +14.1%), while imports for the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.
In value terms, the United States ($36M) constituted the largest supplier of recovered paper to India, comprising 35% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by the UK ($15M), with a 15% share of total imports. It was followed by Italy, with a 10% share.
From July 2022 to July 2023, the average monthly growth rate of value from the United States totaled -7.3%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average monthly rates of imports growth: the UK (-2.7% per month) and Italy (+6.9% per month).

Paper or paperboard; waste and scrap, of paper or paperboard n.e.s. in heading no. 4707 and of unsorted waste and scrap (337K tons), paper or paperboard; waste and scrap, of unbleached kraft paper or paperboard or of corrugated paper or paperboard (202K tons) and paper or paperboard; waste and scrap, of paper or paperboard made mainly of bleached chemical pulp, not coloured in the mass (37K tons) were the main products of recovered paper imports to India, with a combined 98% share of total imports.

In value terms, the most traded types of recovered paper in India were paper or paperboard; waste and scrap, of paper or paperboard n.e.s. in heading no. 4707 and of unsorted waste and scrap ($56M), paper or paperboard; waste and scrap, of unbleached kraft paper or paperboard or of corrugated paper or paperboard ($33M) and paper or paperboard; waste and scrap, of paper or paperboard made mainly of bleached chemical pulp, not coloured in the mass ($9.9M), with a combined 98% share of total imports.
Import Prices by Country
In July 2023, the recovered paper price stood at $173 per ton (CIF, India), shrinking by -7.4% against the previous month. Overall, the import price continues to indicate a drastic downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in April 2023 when the average import price increased by 3.7% against the previous month. The import price peaked at $325 per ton in July 2022; however, from August 2022 to July 2023, import prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by the country of origin: the country with the highest price was the United Arab Emirates ($220 per ton), while the price for the UK ($144 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From July 2022 to July 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the United Arab Emirates (-3.9%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
