India plans to broaden its electric vehicle (EV) incentives, allowing more automakers to benefit from EV production, regardless of whether they build new plants or utilize existing factories in the country. This information was gathered from a source reported by Reuters.

Currently, India's electric vehicle policy is in the finalization phase, with potential shifts to attract major global automotive players such as Toyota and Hyundai to manufacture EV models within the country. The original focus of the policy was on enticing Tesla to manufacture locally, a plan that did not materialize earlier this year.

Policy Details and Implications

The new policy framework is expected to reduce import taxes significantly for automakers investing at least $500 million in EV production, with a mandate that 50% of components be sourced locally. This move is intended to create a favorable economic environment for the growth of the EV sector. Interestingly, investment in existing gasoline-engine and hybrid car factories will also qualify, provided there is a separate line for EV production.

With regard to ensuring equitable treatment of manufacturers, the Indian government will establish a minimum revenue target specifically for EVs to remain eligible for the incentives.

India's Automotive Trade Statistics

According to IndexBox data, India's export value for passenger cars in 2023 was estimated at $6.7 billion, while imports stood at $734.3 million. Among the top countries importing passenger cars from India were Saudi Arabia and South Africa, each with imports valued at $1.2 billion, followed by Mexico ($914.6 million), the United Arab Emirates ($421 million), and Chile ($273.1 million).

Conversely, India's top import sources for passenger cars included Germany at $189.1 million, the United Kingdom at $128.4 million, and China at $88.4 million, among others. This substantial trade activity highlights the growing importance of India's automotive sector on a global scale.

As these policy deliberations continue, the final rollout expected by March could significantly reshape the EV manufacturing landscape in India, potentially drawing further foreign investment and enhancing India's position as a burgeoning hub for electric vehicles.
