Silk Yarn Price in India Slumps 20% to $36.7 per kg After Two Consecutive Months of Decline

India Silk Yarn Import Price in February 2023

In February 2023, the silk yarn price stood at $36,699 per ton (CIF, India), which is down by -19.6% against the previous month. In general, the import price saw a perceptible contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in December 2022 when the average import price increased by 44% m-o-m. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the peak figure at $60,648 per ton in March 2022; however, from April 2022 to February 2023, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by the country of origin: the country with the highest price was Vietnam ($70,394 per ton), while the price for China stood at $29,922 per ton.

From February 2022 to February 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Vietnam (+0.5%).

India Silk Yarn Import Prices by Type

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplied products. In February 2023, the product with the highest price was silk yarn ($102K per ton), while the price for yarn spun from silk waste ($19,470 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From February 2022 to February 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by silk yarn (+3.9%), while the prices for the other products experienced a decline.

India Silk Yarn Imports

Silk yarn imports into India dropped rapidly to 39 tons in February 2023, falling by -28% compared with the previous month's figure. In general, imports, however, saw a temperate increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in July 2022 with an increase of 158% month-to-month.

In value terms, silk yarn imports declined markedly to $1.4M (IndexBox estimates) in February 2023. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a mild increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in July 2022 when imports increased by 123% month-to-month. As a result, imports reached the peak of $3.2M. From August 2022 to February 2023, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

India Silk Yarn Imports by Type

In February 2023, yarn spun from silk waste (27 tons) constituted the largest type of silk yarn supplied to India, with a 71% share of total imports. Moreover, yarn spun from silk waste exceeded the figures recorded for the second-largest type, silk yarn (7.8 tons), fourfold.

From February 2022 to February 2023, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of the volume of import of yarn spun from silk waste totaled +6.3%. With regard to the other supplied products, the following average monthly rates of growth were recorded: silk yarn (-2.8% per month) and silk yarn and yarn spun from silk waste, put up for retail sale (+44.5% per month).

In value terms, silk yarn ($790K), yarn spun from silk waste ($532K) and silk yarn and yarn spun from silk waste, put up for retail sale ($91K) constituted the most imported types of silk yarn and yarn spun from silk waste in India.

India Silk Yarn Imports by Country

In February 2023, China (32 tons) constituted the largest supplier of silk yarn to India, accounting for a 83% share of total imports. Moreover, silk yarn imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Vietnam (6.4 tons), fivefold.

From February 2022 to February 2023, the average monthly growth rate of volume from China totaled +7.1%.

In value terms, China ($962K) constituted the largest supplier of silk yarn to India, comprising 68% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Vietnam ($448K), with a 32% share of total imports.

From February 2022 to February 2023, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of value from China stood at +5.6%.
