India's Import of Parasols Plummets to $448K in November 2023

India Umbrella Imports

In November 2023, the amount of umbrellas imported into India fell remarkably to 721K units, waning by -26.1% on the previous month's figure. In general, imports recorded a pronounced setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in April 2023 with an increase of 190% m-o-m. Imports peaked at 7.1M units in May 2023; however, from June 2023 to November 2023, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, umbrella imports plummeted to $448K (IndexBox estimates) in November 2023. Overall, imports continue to indicate a abrupt contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in April 2023 with an increase of 160% m-o-m. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at 3.1M units in May 2023; however, from June 2023 to November 2023, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Moreover, umbrellas and sun umbrellas (other than having a telescopic shaft or garden umbrellas) exceeded the figures recorded for the second-largest type, garden or similar umbrellas (211K units), twofold.

From November 2022 to November 2023, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of the volume of import of umbrellas and sun umbrellas (other than having a telescopic shaft or garden umbrellas) was relatively modest. With regard to the other supplied products, the following average monthly rates of growth were recorded: garden or similar umbrellas (-8.4% per month) and umbrellas having a telescopic shaft (excluding garden umbrellas) (-5.1% per month).

In value terms, umbrellas and sun umbrellas (other than having a telescopic shaft or garden umbrellas) ($264K), garden or similar umbrellas ($180K) and umbrellas having a telescopic shaft (excluding garden umbrellas) ($3.2K) were the most imported types of umbrellas in India.

Import Prices by Country

In November 2023, the umbrella price stood at $621 per thousand units (CIF, India), with an increase of 6.5% against the previous month. Overall, the import price, however, continues to indicate a pronounced curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in September 2023 an increase of 45% against the previous month. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $830 per thousand units. From October 2023 to November 2023, the average import prices remained at a lower figure.

As there is only one major supplying country, the average price level is determined by prices for China.

From November 2022 to November 2023, the rate of growth in terms of prices for China amounted to -1.0% per month.
