Indian Banking System Faces Highest Liquidity Deficit in Over a Decade

The Indian banking system is grappling with its highest liquidity deficit in over a decade, fueled by the central bank's strategic dollar sales aimed at stabilizing the volatile rupee. According to Bloomberg, the banking system's cash deficit was measured at 3.3 trillion rupees ($38.2 billion) on Thursday, marking the highest level since at least 2010.

This situation has prompted significant market speculation. On Thursday, a substantial amount of government bonds, totaling 72.22 billion rupees ($840 million), was purchased by the category typically comprising the central bank, insurance, and pension funds, as reported by the Clearing Corporation of India Limited.

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has scaled up its liquidity support in response to the cash crunch, including the announcement of daily variable repo rate auctions on working days. Despite these efforts, economists like Upasna Bhardwaj from Kotak Mahindra Bank suggest that the RBI needs to enhance its liquidity infusions proactively to address the ongoing financial tightness.
