Indian Economy Poised for Rebound in 2025, Says Central Bank Governor

The Reserve Bank of India's recently appointed Governor, Sanjay Malhotra, has expressed optimism about the nation's economic prospects, anticipating a recovery in 2025. Bloomberg reports that this comes amidst promising consumer and business confidence, despite a challenging economic environment.

In his inaugural public remarks on the growth outlook, Governor Malhotra highlighted that consumer and business confidence is robust for the upcoming year, with corporations entering 2025 backed by strong balance sheets and high profitability. His comments were made in the foreword of the bi-annual Financial Stability Report, which was released earlier this week.

Malhotra's appointment in December was unexpected, and during his press briefing, he emphasized the importance of stability and growth for the economy. However, he refrained from providing specific guidance on future monetary policy directions.

The Indian economy has recently experienced its weakest growth phase in nearly two years, leading analysts and the RBI to revise the growth forecast for the current fiscal year to approximately 6.5%, a notable decline from over 8% in the prior fiscal period, which concluded in March 2024. According to IndexBox data, this slowdown can be attributed to several domestic and international factors impacting economic activities.

Despite these setbacks, the RBI's Financial Stability Report forecasts a recovery in the latter half of the fiscal year, driven primarily by domestic consumption and investment, robust service exports, and favorable financial conditions.

Looking globally, Malhotra noted increased optimism due to easing inflation rates, which he believes will provide central banks with more monetary policy flexibility to foster growth. Nevertheless, he cautioned about persisting medium-term challenges that include potential geopolitical tensions, market disruptions, and environmental adversities.

The governor assured that the RBI would prioritize financial stability to support a sustainable growth trajectory for the Indian economy. The banking sector remains well-capitalized, with a capital adequacy ratio anticipated to maintain around 16.5% by March 2026, according to stress tests conducted by the RBI. However, the report suggests a potential rise in non-performing assets, which could challenge the financial sector due to weakening corporate profits and household incomes, affecting the ability of borrowers to honor their debts.
