Indian IPOs Show Resilience Amid Broader Market Downturn
The Indian stock market is witnessing a peculiar trend as freshly listed stocks are resisting the broader market downturn, offering hope for a sustained bull run in initial public offerings (IPOs). According to Bloomberg, the 23 stocks that debuted in India so far this year have risen by an average of 15% from their offer prices. This contrasts sharply with a more than 2% decline in the benchmark NSE Nifty 50 Index this year, highlighting the resilience of new stocks despite economic concerns.
As last year's potent rally in Indian shares has stumbled, resulting in the Nifty 50 experiencing its worst monthly losing run since 2001, there is still strong demand for new equity offerings. The securities regulator is currently handling over 60 IPO applications, suggesting a robust pipeline. "New listings will continue to emerge," stated Neha Agarwal, managing director and head of equity capital markets at JM Financial Institutional Securities Ltd., reinforcing the confidence domestic investors have in the market.
Agarwal anticipates that initial share sales in India might generate between $25 billion and $30 billion in 2025, surpassing 2024's record-setting total of approximately $21 billion in proceeds. Additionally, funds raised by companies through direct share sales to institutions are expected to exceed last year's figures.
Despite the optimistic outlook, IPO stocks are not completely immune to the broader market's negative sentiment. Some significant listings from last year are feeling the pressure, with the 53% rise in shares of food delivery company Swiggy Ltd. dissipating since its November debut, and Hyundai Motor India Ltd.'s shares remaining below their IPO price following its $3.3 billion share sale in October.
In 2025, most listings have been small, with nearly all raising less than $100 million. However, larger upcoming IPOs are on the horizon, including South Korea's LG Electronics Inc.'s plan to list its Indian unit potentially raising over $1 billion, and HDB Financial Services Ltd., a unit of India's largest private-sector lender, aiming for an IPO of up to $1.5 billion this year.
Kunal Vora, India strategist at BNP Paribas SA, noted a "heavy equity pipeline," highlighting the role of domestic mutual funds. These funds, receiving inflows of about $3 billion each month from local investors, are a driving force behind the demand for equity issuances such as IPOs, placements, and block trades, as long as the supply is adequately met.
