India's leading importers of liquefied natural gas (LNG) are currently in discussions to secure more fuel from US suppliers, aligning with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's anticipated visit to meet President Donald Trump in Washington DC this week. According to a report by Bloomberg, this move marks a strategic approach by Indian firms, including Indian Oil Corp., to engage in long-term LNG contracts with top US exporters like Cheniere Energy Inc.

This development comes in the wake of increased conversations between Indian companies and US suppliers, a trend that has been on the rise since Trump's election victory. The urgency has been further fueled by India's projected increase in demand for cleaner fuels, as the nation aims to reduce its reliance on dirtier energy sources.

According to IndexBox data, the United States exported LNG worth $33.4 billion in 2023, with major consumers including the Netherlands ($4.4 billion), France ($3.8 billion), and the United Kingdom ($3.5 billion). This underscores the critical role the US plays in the global LNG market. Meanwhile, US LNG imports in 2023 amounted to $963.1 million, with notable imports from Trinidad and Tobago ($513.7 million) and Nigeria ($449.3 million).

The discussions in India coincide with broader international efforts to mitigate trade imbalances with the US, as countries like Japan and the EU explore similar avenues. As India positions itself to potentially increase its LNG imports, these negotiations reflect a significant economic maneuvering as Modi prepares for diplomatic talks with Trump.
