India's Ambitious Infrastructure Push: Budget 2025/2026 Unveiled

India has announced a capital expenditure of Rs 11.21 lakh crore ($129.4 billion) for the fiscal year 2025/2026, accounting for 3.1% of the country's GDP. This expansive budget was revealed in the Union Budget presented by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on February 1 as reported by GMK Center. Key highlights include ambitious strides in infrastructure expansion, with a keen focus on sectors like electric mobility, green energy, and urban modernization.

According to the IndexBox platform, India's construction sector is expected to experience a compound annual growth rate of 8.1% through 2026. This aligns with government's enhanced infrastructure investment strategy, which includes significant allocations toward renewable energy projects, such as wind, solar, and green hydrogen. The budget also aims to simplify the tax system, introducing initiatives to streamline tax compliance and offer incentives for green investments.

The budget echoes a commitment to strengthening India's industrial landscape, notably supporting the steel sector. Minister of Steel and Heavy Industries, H.D. Kumaraswamy, emphasized that the infrastructure investments, coupled with export promotion initiatives, would revitalize the steel industry. Efforts will focus on enhancing domestic supply chains across sectors like automotive, railways, shipbuilding, defense, and heavy engineering.

In an effort to augment India's position in global supply chains, there is an emphasis on increasing exports of high-quality, specialty, and value-added steel. The impending launch of BharatTradeNet (BTN) is anticipated to facilitate export processes for Indian steel manufacturers by digitizing trade documentation.

In terms of trade policy, the budget maintained the basic import duty for various steel products at 7.5%. However, the tariff for imports of certain stainless steel flat products was reduced from 22.5% to 15%, effective February 2, 2025. This adjustment comes amidst local industry calls to double the basic duty on steel imports to mitigate oversupply issues impacting domestic prices.
