India's Annual Budget 2023: Tax Cuts and Sector Boosts to Fuel Growth

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government has unveiled its annual budget, focusing on middle-class tax cuts and boosting sectors like agriculture and manufacturing to foster economic growth. For more details, you can read the full report here.

In her budget speech, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman emphasized increasing private investment, heightening agricultural funding, and strengthening the spending power of India's middle class. The government has also set its sights on achieving a fiscal deficit of 4.4% of India's GDP by the 2025-26 financial year.

Income Tax Reforms

Sitharaman announced transformative tax reforms, including raising the income tax threshold from $8,074 to $14,800. This new structure aims to lighten the tax burden on the middle class, enhancing their consumption, savings, and investment capacity. These reforms are expected to ease discontent within the salaried middle class and support economic growth by facilitating job creation.

Agriculture and Gig Economy Initiatives

To increase agricultural productivity, particularly in pulses and cotton production, the budget proposes a nationwide program benefiting 17 million farmers and raising subsidized credit limits from $3,460 to $5,767. Additionally, measures are in place to support India's gig economy, which could employ over 23 million people by 2030, by endowing gig workers with identity cards and ensuring their access to healthcare and welfare programs.

Investments in Startups and Energy

Sitharaman further announced a new startup fund to stimulate innovation alongside the private sector and initiatives to advance manufacturing and exports. Despite manufacturing representing about 17% of the economy, the government aspires to raise this figure to 25%, alongside expanding tourism-led employment and infrastructure development.
